Alternatives
Self-hosted alternatives to Vercel, Heroku, Railway and Coolify
Levelrail is one platform that sits in two places: a self-hosted stand-in for hosted platforms, and an agent-based alternative to other self-hosted ones. For each, here is what you keep and what you give up.
Choose the platform you are leaving
- Levelrail vs Vercel Hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
- Levelrail vs Heroku Hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
- Levelrail vs Railway Hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
- Levelrail vs Coolify Self-hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
- Levelrail vs Dokploy Self-hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
- Levelrail vs CapRover Self-hosted. Sourced side-by-side.
Vercel alternative
What you keep. Git deploys, a preview environment per pull request and one-command rollback, on a server you own. You pay for the server, not per request or seat.
What you give up. No edge runtime, no ISR cache, no image optimization service and no visitor analytics. Apps run as long-lived containers built from a Dockerfile. Put a CDN in front if you need an edge.

Heroku alternative
What you keep. Git-driven deploys, managed databases with scheduled and verified backups, scheduled jobs and one-click rollback, with no per-dyno fee.
What you give up. You run the servers and are the one on call. Builds come from a Dockerfile or an image, not buildpacks, and there is no add-on marketplace. There is no dedicated Heroku migration runbook yet.

Railway alternative
What you keep. The same push-to-deploy loop, with templates, environment variables and logs, but on your own hardware and with no usage billing.
What you give up. There is no hosted offering and no managed infrastructure. You install and update the platform yourself.

Coolify alternative
What you keep. Both are self-hosted. Here an agent dials out to the control plane over mutual TLS instead of the control plane connecting in over SSH, and metrics, log search and rollback are built into the core.
What you give up. Coolify has the broader one-click template list and manages servers you already have over plain SSH with nothing but Docker installed. Moving over uses a read-only importer with a dry run.

Dokploy alternative
What you keep. A reconciler that compares desired and observed state on every pass, an agent model with no inbound ports on managed servers and node-local observability.
What you give up. Dokploy builds on Docker Swarm, which suits teams that already work in that model. Moving over uses a read-only importer with a dry run.
Levelrail vs Dokploy, with the capability table Migrate from Dokploy
CapRover alternative
What you keep. Agent-based multi-server management, built-in metrics and logs, readiness-gated deploys and managed databases with scheduled backups.
What you give up. CapRover is older and has a long track record. If one server and a small, familiar tool are all you need, it may be enough. Moving over uses a read-only importer with a dry run.

What is not covered
Netlify, Render and other hosted platforms are not compared here, because nothing in the product or its docs backs a claim about them. The comparison matrix covers Dokku, Kamal and Cloud Run as well.
Questions
What is a good self-hosted alternative to Vercel, Heroku or Railway?
Levelrail gives you git deploys, preview environments, TLS, logs, metrics and rollback on servers you own. It does not provide an edge network, an edge runtime, ISR, image optimization or a managed cloud, so check the gaps listed for each platform above.
What is a good alternative to Coolify, Dokploy or CapRover?
Levelrail is a fit if you want an agent that dials out instead of SSH, observability in the core and a read-only importer with a dry run. Each of those projects is a better choice in specific cases, which the comparison pages state.
Is it free?
Yes. Levelrail is Apache 2.0 with one edition and no license key. You pay for your servers only.
Levelrail is pre-release. Run it next to your current platform before you retire anything.
